Have you decided that now is the time to get engaged to your significant other? Do you feel confident in making this major life decision? Maybe you’ve been with her for years and have planned on getting married for a long time and the timing is finally right, or maybe you haven’t known her all that long, but are sure that she’s the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. However you’ve decided, you might be wondering what the next steps are in getting engaged.

The first step is to choose a ring; we cover that process in a previous blog post. Now, it’s time to figure out how to make the actual engagement happen.

Think about what she’d like

You might feel overwhelmed with trying to find and plan the perfect moment to pop the question. It’s important to remember that you know your partner the best. You know what she likes and what would make her happy. Think about her favorite places and if she’d rather this moment be in front of other people, like close family and friends, or private between the two of you. Consider some of the most special places to the two of you and think about proposing there! A great option is to go to the place you had your first date, first kiss, or some other special memory and pop the question there.

Plan it out

Once you have a general idea of what you think she’d like, plan it out. You can be as detailed as you want with the plan or just figure out a few specifics. As long as you have some form of a plan in place, you can count on it going better than it would have without one. It also gives you a concrete timeline of when you’re going to propose, so you do not have to keep worrying about when you’ll do it once you get the ring. Having a plan decreases the stress around the proposal and means that you can just enjoy this huge moment in your life with the person you love.

Create a backup plan

Even if you only have a general idea of how, where, and when you want to propose, create a backup plan. Life is constantly throwing curveballs; the day you had chosen to propose may end up being a day she makes plans with her family or has a surprise visit from an out-of-town friend. Having a backup plan means you do not have to stress about everything going perfectly and gives you options on when to propose.
